John Keay's A History of India (Harper Collins India 2007) makes a really good investment of the bookstore gift voucher from a friend-student, whose perspective, questions and queries have constantly made me re-visit my notions and fundamentals.
Before this, had picked up the book 5 times but ne'er bought it for keeps.
I now own it just because of the email reminder which got me hunting 3 Crossword Stores in a day.
"...before I forget.. the Crossword voucher i gave you, has a validity of a few days over a month left.. so if you havent yet put it to good use, i would suggest you please allow yourself to be an enriched reader of a good book!..."
A fine way with words there...must say. :))
Ya, i know one can get books home delivered; but then the pleasure of tracking down a good book is lost. And as a reference book this title deserves that kind of effort.
John Keay 's Great Arc was a very good read.
As a narrative, " India..." is in the league of Jawaharlal Nehru's Glimpses of World History, Porpola's writing on Harappa, Kushwant Singh on Delhi and Romila Thapar and AL Basham on India.
Thanks for the gift, the reminder and the impetus, intelligent kid:)
