Trumpets and violins I can hear in distance
I think they're calling our names
Maybe now you can't hear them, but you will
If you just take hold of my hand
Oh... but are you experienced?
(Are you experienced?: The Jimi Hendrix Experience 1967; LP)
Jimi Hendrix - Guitar Devil- refuses to play in my house, ever since I spoke to a Projects Head of a reputed Indian public sector company.
This company is seeking an expression of interest for getting a large site designed and developed after a land use feasibility study. The company's information document mentions that the architect and landscape architect of the project must have undertaken significantly similar works in the past 7 years, and should have won a prize/ meritorious award.Apparently, we were not qualified to participate just since as of now we do not have the money or the medals, and it is our bad luck that the proposals we have worked on have remained as proposals.
At the end of an exasperating telphone conversation, my two pence to the chap was "...the architects who have done similar work in the past and won awards for it -and you very well know who they are- given this project typology- are now busy doing malls, multiplexes and gated communities whose Masterplan has been doodled upon by firms from Malaysia, Singapore and HongKong. As a professionally focussed though young Firm, we can give our complete attention to the project, more so because it will be such a big thing for us. We don't have a million rupees turnover (yet) but we have collaborated on some big projects as part of a multifacted team. So we are in a position to do a thoroughly professional study and proposal for you too. We are not asking you to give us this project at this point of time...Just A-L-L-O-W us to submit our proposal for it !"
There was a glimmer of hope when the chap offered to put in a word with his boss aided by my firm's profile and projects slides. Since the company believes in "giving young minds a chance" in their projects, they could extend that culture to something like this, and give "this young landscape architect a chance to make a proposal".
I was thinking that the years of watching Amitabh Bachchan 's monologues seems to have paid off.
His endline still ricochets in my head. Very un-Hendrix though same.
"Uh... But Are You...Experienced?"
Educating the chap for leeching a Hendrix song would be the least one should have done under the circumstances. But I did not.
That... has ticked off Mr Hendrix.
