Tensile structures @ SPA Delhi

The Brick-red walls of the Maharani Baug Hostel of the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi enclose a great courtyard. This place is the venue of boisterous Holi celebrations, music jam sessions and fiercely contested cricket matches. The courtyard was also a venue for a Convocation in 2000-2001, where the sky and the brick-red walls were punctuated with an ensemble of fabric tensile structures.

The ensemble consisted of "group work" models made in a Basic Design studio, from which chosen ones which were blown up to full scale. Each elemental tensile structure carried the names of its creators (the students) on the edge seams. The interesting bit is that the basic design class did not have this culmination as its pre-charted intention. Prof.I.M.Chisti is said to have co-ordinated this fascinating learning experience.

The above picture is archival in some ways, taken from a SPA greeting card. Better  pictures exist with the college, usually exhibited during occasions such as convocations, annual cultural week etc. Wish they were more accessible to the public in some sort of ready manner.
