An Ode

ODE TO ACADEMY OF ARCHITECTURE

Written by R. Sriganesh. Graduate batch 2001.

The following is the verbatim reproduction of the farewell speech given on the Occasion of the Graduation Day –Batch 2001 Academy of Architecture.

“This day is significant to us, the batch of 2001. It is also an epoch as it marks the revival of a tradition of Convocation, where the institute formally acknowledges the presence, development and contribution of a batch of fresh 12-Std students. Students who, after five years would become an integral part of the tapestry we all know as Academy of Architecture.
As a part of this graduating batch, I take this opportunity on behalf of my class, to re-create some of the events that shall remain indelible in our lives for ever, including new friends and new directions in thought and deed.

From 1st yr on, Academy profs are known to generate a tear
Sometimes it hits like Vodka, other times beer
Rajiv Mishra  is one whom we did not fear
But then he moved out after a year
He taught us civilization in History
But why he called me “Shankar”, remains a mystery.

Mr. Khanolkar and his Scale Drawing Class
we tried to perfect our sheets with the help of some glass
His jhaaping was worse than a beating
Ouch!! it still hurts whenever we think of GT-ing

Lines Dots and Curves comprised Basic Design
Whatever Thanawala faulted, for Khalil ‘twas fine,
Rajiv Sathe made space a revelation
Sameep Padora‘s red hair was his introduction.

The "ACADEMITE" initiation was in Panchgani
by Seniors like Rajiv Panjabi-Oh! he was so funny
We’d go to his room, he’d give us money
To get what he’d want in 10 minutes, we’d run like a bunny.

Suresh Singh bonded mortar and bricks.
After the 2nd year  tour, he taught us modeling tricks.
Humorous, but always Prudent
He exemplified faculty bonding with student.

Our first mass bunk was a subject called Art
The “method” lecture killed us right at the start
Our skin was darker, we were the brownies
We came to know a species called Townies

2nd Yr Design was pure recreation
Venkatesh Rao was an Institution
Tassaduq's comments would always sting
Nachiket Patwardhan always felt "Chitra shouldn't Sing"

Prasanna Wategaonkar - King of perspective
to fetch 8/ 10 marks from him was the initiative
History with Baba Narvekar and Jayant Sinnari  was fun
In catching bunking students, Jagdish Rajde was like none.

3rd Yr Design faculty was clockwork
To get around them you needed more than teamwork
Savio Histas Rajan Mahesh and Porus
“Let’s Mass bunk the Esquisse” !! 6 students went against the chorus.

Interior Design with Amberkar, Arun Narvekar and Bobby.
The first two were considerate, the latter made u sobby
Landscape was diverse , yet with individuality
Mrs. Hankare at the helm, what a colourful personality!!

Suhas Chande was fun, and hence theory of structure
Now our designs became safe, no scope for rupture.
Abha Narain taught us Indian History
We guys were always under a spell, was it magic or mystery?

Kale, Nargunde, Suresh Singh in working drawing
Our schedule upset, soon hair we were clawing.
Balancing lineweights for dado and plaster
The respite was Milind Amle- the Perfect Year Master.

In 4th Yr Jal Aria was the Oration King,
Raja Dixit was fixated with color rendering
Soft spoken Mr Hankare, witty tho’ not a joker
The Rajasthan Bhaang Incident was like jackpot in Poker

One subject that most liked was the elective
The choice of subjects although was selective
Vikas, Pulin, Anita, Amol and Sohoni
The hype in a few finally turned phony.

Thesis demanded introspection
With the help of our guides, we sought perfection
Town Planning lingered on and on in confusion
Amol Shimpi’s lectures were a life-saving contribution

In Services, Vikas Joshi talked about like the fire alarm
We hated it if he was absent, such was his charm.
Milind Chitale –year master with the smile
Reduced the gap between student-teacher by many a mile.

Mr Gokhale’s favourites were the people from his elective
My attention in Professional Practice was definitely selective
To his questions I’d guess answers without fear
Perhaps that’s why he felt I’m sincere.

Uday Chande was a prof' so free
With all his light humor how strict could he be?
He’d say “every batch is different, yet there’s still something same”
“I take roll calls to enjoy the rhythm of a surname”

Thus, Final Year was the Grand Daddy of all
The Theatre Workshops were such a ball
It was the year of Auto CAD 14 but plotting was no fun
Of the hyped Trophies in NASA, we managed to get none.

At the end of this rainbow, life would be our test
We’re now ready to run, and give it our best
Like Academy, there is other no place under the sun,
We are proud to be Academites- the Batch of 2001
