Continuing my fascination with Place names some of which is listed here, my discovery of Bangalore is adding to the list.
Till now I have come across :
Pete (pronounced pay-tey)...usually ascribed to the old city. It is a synonym for "market" and is resonant with the Marathi word "Peth". (e.g. Chickapete, Chamarajapete)
Agarahara: the Brahmin quarter of a heterogenous village, or an enclave of the Brahmin community. (e.g. Roopena agrahara, Konappana agarhara). In ancient times these areas were the seats of local governance and places of education.
Palya : a local municipality headed by a Paleyagara or local chieftan under direct rule of the king. (e.g. Sadgunthepalya)
Gudi: a temple area usually having a regional prominence. (e.g. Basavanagudi...the Bull temple)
Godi: unsure of whether it is a corruption of Gudi. If not, it supposedly means "godown" (e.g. Adugodi, Kadugodi)
Kere: lake, suffixed to places with large lakes (e.g. Arakere, Mathikere)
Uru/ Ooru: a town, sometimes a suburb in a town (e.g. Bengaluru, Alasuru , Dommaluru)
Halli: a village known for a certain speciality (e.g. Marathahalli, Bommanahalli, Billekehalli)
Sandra: supposed to be a corruption of Samdra...i.e. vast body of water (e.g. Neelasandra, Jakkasandra)
Pura : another variant to "town".
I believe there is more to unravel as one comes more in contact with the mellifluous Kannada language.
